The music community is in mourning today with the news that the excellent drummer Mikie Kalfayan passed away early this morning from cardiac arrest. More than just an excellent drummer, Mikie was a consummate musician and, above all, a good man with a big heart.
His passing leaves a profound silence where there was once rhythm, groove, and boundless energy. Mikie’s skill behind the kit was undeniable, providing the backbone for countless performances and recordings. But those who knew him will remember his character most—his kindness, his generosity, and the genuine warmth he extended to everyone. He is loved by many and will be missed greatly.
To honor his memory and the joy he brought to so many, I would like to plan a celebration of his life. It feels only fitting to gather where the music lives on. I am thinking of holding it at Freddy’s, a place that resonates with our shared history. The goal is to bring together all of his musician friends, colleagues, and admirers for an evening of stories, shared memories, and, of course, music.
This will be a chance for us to play the songs he loved, share the tales that define his spirit, and collectively remember the incredible man we were lucky to know. Let’s come together to celebrate Mikie Kalfayan—not with silence, but with the sound of the community he helped create. Details will follow, but mark your calendars for a send-off filled with the rhythm and heart he embodied.
This is Jim Morrill I knew Mike when we were teenagers.. I was just learning guitar and found out he played drums and we started jamming in his mom’s basement. It’s an awesome memory for me..
